There’s an old saying that only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. But there’s one more you can add to the list – the visible effects of aging. No matter how well you care for your skin during your youth, once you reach a certain age – usually somewhere in your 40s, but sometimes in your 50s or even your 30s – you’re going to start to see those tiny wrinkles and lines around your eyes, forehead and mouth, followed shortly by a loss of natural volume and “plumpness” – in short, you’re going to start to look older.
Not too long ago, combatting those signs of aging meant getting a costly, invasive facelift – followed by a long and uncomfortable period of recovery. Thankfully, though, medical research keeps marching forward, and today, many women and men are turning to what’s known as a “liquid facelift” to help them turn back the hands of time and regain a more youthful, more rejuvenated appearance.
What Is a Liquid Facelift?
The term “liquid facelift” (also called a non-surgical facelift) refers to the use of cosmetic injectables – including BOTOX® and dermal fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane® and Radiesse® – to minimize the appearance of lines, wrinkles and scars, and to restore some of the volume and “plumpness” lost to aging. Liquid facelifts come with plenty of advantages over traditional facelifts, like:
- significantly lower cost
- greater convenience – treatments are performed right in the office, typically in less than 20 minutes
- no downtime – you can resume your regular activities right away
- more “customized” results thanks to targeted application of different fillers
- far fewer risks; for most people, a little local bruising and minor injection site swelling are all they experience, and those issues clear up very soon after the injections
With BOTOX and fillers, women and men can enjoy many of the same benefits of a traditional facelift without surgery – and that’s made injectables extremely popular. In fact, according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic injectables are the most popular cosmetic treatment among both men and women.
What Happens During Treatment?
Treatment begins with an evaluation of your face and a review of your goals to determine the best placement for BOTOX or fillers. Then the injections sites are cleansed and the material is injected, usually in more than one spot to ensure it disperses evenly. BOTOX uses very fine needles, and most patients notice little more than a small “pinch” during the injection. Many fillers use topical anesthetics or include lidocaine in their formulation to minimize discomfort. Plus, many fillers stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen so skin looks firmer and feels more resilient over time.
BOTOX and fillers can be used together – BOTOX treats “dynamic” wrinkles like crow’s feet and forehead and frown lines that form when we make facial expressions, while fillers treat wrinkles and “hollowed-out” areas that occur as a result of sun exposure and age-related changes in the skin. Together, BOTOX and fillers can be used to address wrinkles, lines and loss of volume throughout the face.
